A Family Photoshoot in Iceland

Iceland is one of those places where family photos do not have to be forced. There is space to move, things to explore, wind in your hair, and moments that happen naturally. Family photos in Iceland can be relaxed, playful, and full of small in between moments. This family photoshoot in Iceland was exactly that.
This session took place on Iceland’s South Coast, with two locations that couldn’t be more different yet work beautifully together for family photography: Reynisfjara black sand beach and Skógafoss waterfall. A family of four, two parents and two kids, exploring, laughing, and simply being present.

Starting the day at Reynisfjara black sand beach

We started this family photoshoot in Iceland at Reynisfjara, where the black sand meets the ocean and the landscape feels calm but powerful at the same time.

The kids stayed close to their parents at first, looking around, taking everything in. Above us, puffins were flying along the cliffs, and the kids immediately noticed them. They stopped, pointed them out, and followed them with their eyes as they flew past the beach. It became one of those quiet moments where no one needed to say much. Everyone was just present.

This is what I love most about family photography in Iceland. The landscape gives families space to slow down. Kids do not have to stand still, and parents do not have to worry about perfect smiles. The best moments happen when everyone forgets about the camera for a bit.

Reynisfjara is especially great for family photos because:

  • there’s space to move without feeling crowded

  • kids can engage with their surroundings

  • the textures photograph beautifully in all weather

The result is candid family photography that feels real and timeless.

Family photos at Skógafoss waterfall

After the beach, we continued to Skógafoss, one of the most recognisable waterfalls in Iceland and for good reason. The scale of it is breathtaking, especially for children seeing it up close.

Here, the kids started running around, laughing, and enjoying the space. They moved freely while their parents stayed close, watching and joining in when the moment called for it. There was a lot of movement, a lot of laughter, and plenty of spontaneous moments.

Skógafoss is perfect for this kind of family photoshoot in Iceland. It gives kids the freedom to be active while naturally bringing the family together. Walking hand in hand, stopping to look at the waterfall, sharing small laughs when the mist reached them. I kept things simple and followed their lead, capturing the moments as they happened. No stiff poses, just real interactions and genuine fun.

For families, waterfalls like Skógafoss offer:

  • strong visual impact without complicated logistics

  • easy access for kids

  • natural moments of awe and closeness

It’s less about the waterfall itself and more about how it makes people feel together.

Planning your own family photoshoot in Iceland

Iceland is an amazing place for outdoor family photos. Beaches, waterfalls, and open landscapes make sessions feel more like an adventure than a formal shoot. If you are thinking about booking a family photoshoot in Iceland, a few things really help:

  • Choose locations that allow kids to explore
Beaches, waterfalls, and open landscapes give kids freedom to move and stay curious, which leads to much more natural photos.

  • Plan extra time so nothing feels rushed
When there is no pressure, kids relax faster and parents can actually enjoy the experience instead of watching the clock.

  • Dress in layers and comfortable shoes
Iceland’s weather can change quickly, and being warm and comfortable makes a huge difference in how everyone feels during the session.

  • Let your kids be themselves
They do not need to behave perfectly or look at the camera, some of the best moments come from laughter, movement, and little surprises.
